Workshop on Satellite Monitoring of Urban Landuse/Land-cover Change

With an increasing number of people live in or move to cities and urban regions, cities and urban regions are growing and sprawling.  Development associated with urban growth and sprawl not only decreases the amount of forest area, farmland, woodlots, and open space but also disrupt ecosystems and fragment habitats. Urban sprawl is cited as a factor in air pollution, since the car-dependent lifestyle imposed by sprawl leads to increases in fossil fuel consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases.  Urban sprawl is also implicated in a host of economic and social issues related to the deterioration of urban communities and the quality of life in General. Therefore, monitoring the spatial-temporal patterns of urban growth and sprawl is of critical importance for urban planning & sustainable development, thus for monitoring global environmental & climate change.

Remote sensing provides a systematic, synoptic view necessary to map urban forms and their changes over time at regular intervals, thus provide excellent opportunity for monitoring the pace of urban growth and sprawl. 

The objective of this workshop is to give participates the opportunity to examine satellite data that are available for monitoring urban landuse & land-cover changes and to familiarize with various digital change detection algorithms.  The current research on satellite monitoring of urban sprawls in Toronto, Canada and selected cities in China will be presented.

It would be helpful, but not required, if the participates have some prior remote sensing knowledge.
