 Wolfgang Kainz 

Prof. Kainz holds a graduate degree in technical mathematics and computer science and a PhD from the Graz University of Technology, Austria. He has nearly 30 years experience in education, research, and consulting. Since 2002 he is a full professor of Cartography and Geoinformation Science at the Department of Geography and Regional Research of the University of Vienna, Austria.

Since 1981 he held various positions as researcher, assistant professor and full professor at the Institute for Digital Image Processing and Computer Graphics of the Graz Research Center, Austria, the Geography Department of the University of Vienna, Austria, the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), The Netherlands, and the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. Prof. Kainz held visiting professor positions at universities in the USA, Brazil, Kuwait, Taiwan, and the Czech Republic. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor of cartography and GIS at the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM), Beijing.

He has been serving in various functions in national and international scientific societies. From 2004 to 2008 he was president of the ISPRS Technical Commission II, and since 2006 he is the president of the Austrian Cartographic Commission. His research interests are in GIS theory, spatial databases, fuzzy logic, and geo-data policy.
